Many of us don’t think twice about cleaning or even checking our roofs every season. Winter is coming to an end and whether or not you had your roof thoroughly inspected, it’s time to add a roof check up to your spring cleaning checklist. Below are a few tasks you should accomplish for your roof.
Remove Debris
If you notice a build up of debris on your roof, this can lead to mold and mildew growth. This can lead to expensive damage or maintenance costs! It's best to get rid of accumulated debris as soon as possible.
There are a couple easy ways to get rid of roof debris. One is to rake the debris off by hand or to use a leaf blower. Practice safety anytime you need to access your roof. If you cannot do this safety, remember to contact a professional roofing contractor to help!
Get Rid of Mold & Mildew
Mold and mildew are very dangerous for your health and the health of your roof. Check your roof for any signs of mold or mildew this spring. If you notice discolored streaks, this is an indication that mold is growing and will need to be removed as soon as possible.
Check for Loose Shingles
Harsh weather conditions can cause shingles to curl, separate and in some cases, completely fall off. Take some time to check for missing or damaged shingles. If you find a problem, nail them down, and get them professionally fixed as soon as possible to avoid leaks.
Inspect Your Attic
Check your ceiling and attic for signs of water damage or mold. Mold in your attic is a sign of either an insulation or ventilation issue, if no roof leaking has occurred. If you see any staining or smell mildew, call a professional and do not attempt to take care of it yourself. A professional roofer can easily pinpoint the exact cause of the damage and make repairs quickly, before it gets worse.
Clean the Gutters
Water should easily flow through your gutters and the downspout system. If it doesn’t, back ups and overflows will occur, leaving you to clean the gutters. There is also a chance that granules or other materials from your roof have spilled from the surface and into the gutter system. Look at where the granules or other materials are coming from and see if you need to replace any shingles or tiles that are becoming thinner or worn out due materials falling off.
Trim Tree Branches
Keeping your trees trimmed away from the roof, if possible, will keep your roof safe from damage caused by heavy rain and wind. You should not attempt to remove excessively large tree branches without help from a professional.
Schedule an Inspection
Spring is the perfect time to ensure your roof is still in good condition or gets the repair it needs! Scheduling an inspection with your local roofing company can save you a lot of stress and money in the long run. Taking preventative measures ensures your roof lasts it's full lifespan.
